2. Bathroom vents
Look at the bathroom exhaust fan covers.
Dust and buildup can reduce airflow, so clean the cover and surrounding area according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Also make sure the fan still seems to be moving air properly.
A bathroom that stays damp long after a shower deserves a closer look.
3. Pipes and faucets
Check under sinks and around exposed plumbing.
Look for:
Drips
Damp spots
Corrosion
Unusual changes in water pressure
Frost on exposed pipes during cold weather
A tiny leak is much easier to deal with than water damage that has been developing behind a cabinet for months.
Big repairs rarely start big.
They start with a small leak nobody noticed. A dirty filter that never gets changed. A vent that hasn't been checked in months. A pipe that freezes because nobody looked at it before the temperature dropped.
One five-minute check each month won't prevent every home repair. But it can help you catch small problems while they're still small.
Why 5 Minutes a Month Matters
Most home problems don't appear out of nowhere.
A slow leak gets worse. Rust spreads. Filters become clogged. Gutters fill with debris. Small warning signs become harder to ignore, and eventually the repair gets expensive.
The goal isn't to spend your weekend inspecting every corner of your house.
It's consistency.
Five minutes every month is easier to maintain than a giant home-maintenance day once a year that never actually happens.
The Monthly Checklist
You don't need to inspect everything every time. Start with these quick checks.
1. Water heater
Take a quick look around the tank.
Check for:
Water or dampness around the base
Rust or corrosion
Unusual noises
Anything that looks different from the previous month
If your water heater requires periodic flushing, follow the manufacturer's instructions for the appropriate schedule.
4. AC or furnace filter
Check the filter every month.
How often it needs to be replaced depends on the filter, HVAC system, household, and manufacturer's recommendations. Some filters may need replacement more frequently than others.
The important part is simple: look at it.
If it's visibly dirty, check the manufacturer's guidance and replace it if appropriate.
5. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Press the test button on your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Make sure they respond as expected and replace batteries according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
Also check the age of the detectors. Many have a limited service life and should eventually be replaced even if they still appear to work.
6. Gutters and downspouts
Take a quick look at the gutters and downspouts.
Are leaves or debris blocking the flow? Is water draining where it should?
You don't necessarily need to clean them every month. The point is to catch a problem before a blocked gutter sends water where you don't want it.
Pay particular attention during heavy-leaf seasons and after major storms.
7. Under the sinks
Open the cabinet doors and look underneath.
8. Exterior faucets
Take a quick look at your outdoor faucets and connections.
Check for dripping, corrosion, or other obvious problems.
Before freezing weather arrives, make sure exterior water supplies are properly shut off and drained according to your home's plumbing setup.
How to Actually Stick to This
The checklist is easy.
Remembering to do it is the hard part.
Pick one day every month
First Saturday. The first day of the month. Whatever works.
The specific day doesn't matter nearly as much as making it predictable.
Keep a simple log
Write down the date and anything you noticed.
You don't need a complicated journal. A simple record can help you spot changes over time.
Take photos
If you notice something that looks unusual, take a quick photo.
That gives you something to compare against next month and can also be useful if you eventually need to show a contractor what changed.
Set a reminder
Put a recurring reminder on your phone.
The goal is to make maintenance a routine rather than something you have to remember from scratch every month.
Five Minutes Now Beats a Big Repair Later
A house doesn't usually fail all at once.
Problems develop one ignored sign at a time.
The water heater, bathroom vents, plumbing, HVAC system, gutters, and detectors are all different parts of your home, but they have one thing in common: they need attention before there's a crisis.
Five minutes a month won't make your house maintenance-free.
It can make it much harder for small problems to hide.
And once you're checking all these different parts of your home, keeping track of them in your head gets old quickly.
House Simply's All-in-One Household Management Binder gives you one organized place to keep track of your home's maintenance, inventory, schedules, and other important household information.
Instead of trying to remember what you checked last month, you have a system you can actually use.
Five minutes. Once a month. That's a much easier habit to keep than a surprise repair bill.
Check for:
Dampness
Slow leaks
Water stains
Musty smells
Swollen cabinet material
This takes seconds and can catch a plumbing problem before it turns into damaged cabinets or flooring.
